   Volume 5 | APRIL 2018

Greetings!

With tax season coming to a close, we at Tax Time Allies want to thank everyone for everything each of you do to help low to moderate income individuals and families with their taxes. As we all know, tax time serves as a powerful opportunity to empower individuals and families by providing them with the chance to take stock of their financial lives and plan for a better future.

This season, we’ve seen countless examples of innovative programs and initiatives to help taxpayers take advantage of the Tax Time Moment. These include programs like “Save Your Refund,” by Commonwealth, “SaverLife” by EARN, “VITA Awareness Day,” sponsored by Prosperity Now to name a few.

CCIA Continued Hosting Free File and VITA Briefings Around the Country

Lithonia, GA - On Tuesday, March 27th, Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) joined community leaders at an event hosted by CCIA at Stonecrest Library to inform taxpayers about free tax preparation options available this tax season through the IRS and Georgia Free File programs, as well as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and AARP Tax-Aide programs.

Immokalee, FL - On Thursday, March 29th, Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25) spoke to local residents at a briefing regarding free tax preparation options available this tax season through the IRS Free File and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs. The event, which took place at the Immokalee Technical College (iTECH), attracted more than 40 attendees, including numerous students, representatives from various community-based organizations, and Collier County Commission Vice Chairman William L. Tax Time Ally Spotlight: Cheryl Teller, Eastern Panhandle EITC Coalition

We would like to recognize one of the many hard-working tax time volunteers, Cheryl Teller. Cheryl serves as an AmeriCorps volunteer at the Eastern Panhandle EITC Coalition in West Virginia. For the last 18 years, Cheryl has helped low to moderate income taxpayers prepare and file their tax returns. Her efforts have empowered many by providing Facilitated Self-Assistance to prepare and file their tax return. Last week we talked to Cheryl about her program and their work.

Q: What is the Eastern Panhandle EITC Coalition?

A: “The EITC Coalition is an entity of MountainHeart Community Services that focuses on assisting low to moderate income taxpayers within the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia by spreading awareness about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) as well as free IRS tax preparation services, such as Free File, that can be used to capture this credit, at absolutely no cost to the taxpayer.

Q: How do you reach your clients?

A: Traditionally we have done this by opening up free tax sites through the VITA program, but this year we incorporated Facilitated Self-Assistance. Facilitated Self-Assistance allows us to help several taxpayers at once while only needing one volunteer per location who was prepared to help local taxpayers file their taxes on their own through Free File.

Q: What kind of impact do these tax time savings have on individuals and families?

A: On average it costs as much as $237 to have even the simplest tax return prepared. So for these men and women who are able to save those dollars and get the most out of their refund instead, thanks to Free File, $237 really goes a long way. It truly is a great feeling to be able to step in and help out within the community. Ultimately, these free tax preparation services help taxpayers leave feeling empowered. That’s what it’s all about.”

Thank you again for all of your hard work this tax season. We are proud to serve alongside you as a Tax Time Ally.

Sincerely,

David Macklin
